Ayodele Casel, Kristina Wong, More Named 2023 Doris Duke Artists

The 2023 class of Doris Duke Artists was revealed at a 10th anniversary celebration for the Doris Duke Artist Awards February 13 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, along with the news that the cash award included with the honor is being doubled. Already the largest award for individual performing artists, Doris Duke Artists honorees will now receive a staggering $550,000 each.

Ayodele Casel, a Doris Duke Artist in the dance category, is an award-winning and critically acclaimed tap dancer and choreographer who was named one of the New York Times’ “biggest breakout stars of 2019.” Born in The Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico, her practice centers highly narrative works rooted in expressions of selfhood, culture and legacy.

United States Artists Award

The Chicago-based arts nonprofit United States Artists (USA) named 45 recipients of this year’s fellowships, each of which comes with an unrestricted $50,000 cash award. The selected artists represent 19 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and a range of age groups and career stages.

HERB ALPERT AWARD IN THE ARTS (2023)

The Herb Alpert Award in the Arts is an unrestricted prize of $75,000 given annually to risk-taking mid-career artists working in the fields of dance, film/video, music, theatre and the visual arts.

HARVARD RADCLIFFE INSTITUTE 2019-2020 FELLOW

During her fellowship, Casel is working on Diary of a Tap Dancer, a theatrical work positioning tap dance as the driving force of the narrative. This project aims to create a fuller and more accurate picture of the legacy of the art form by centering the voices of its unnamed women within a broader historical context.
